The information padlock

In order to alert the public in situations where they are being asked to disclose personal information which may then be processed, the Information Commissioner, an independent officer who reports to Parliament and promotes and to an extent policies the Data Protection Act 1998 has launched an information signpost scheme featuring a padlock symbol. This will be used by data controllers and placed at any point where information is requested in the media used.

It is intended that customers will then be able to tell at a glance that their personal information is being collected; and they will be directed to sources which will clearly explain how their information is to be used. This padlock symbol can be downloaded from www.dataprotection.gov.uk.
